Four hard days later, often traveling in a light driving rain, Engel’s column had only advanced another forty miles, barely more than one-third of the way to their goal. If the men had thought they were exhausted earlier, they could barely move at all by the end of each day now. The roads continued to define the term quagmire and it seemed that the musket men and now, the pikemen who had been ordered to help, were doing more to move the wagons than the draft horses were.

Fortunately, it turned out that Colonel Dieter Engel was not entirely without a sense of compassion. He noticed that the column required a day off—to rest the cavalry horses. Apparently, walking through the mud was very difficult for the huge animals.

Purely by coincidence, the colonel’s realization coincided with the discovery of a passable inn upon the road where he and his cavalry officers could sleep and dine in comfort.
